In order to secure the vote’s secrecy, the voter should be alone in the voting booth. Only if the voter needs assistance are exceptions to be allowed by law (see “assisted voting” below). Not acceptable is so-called family voting, which was once common in the former Soviet Union and in Eastern Europe. Though it is nowadays prohibited by law, in practice, family voting or group voting is sometimes still tolerated. Electoral observers witnessed instances of family and group voting, inter alia, in Albania, Latvia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, and, to a large extent, in Kosovo.
